
Employees may engage in off duty employment when it presents
no potential conflict of interest between duties as a Sheriffs Office
employee and duties required by the off duty employer. Employment
involving potential conflicts of interest is prohibited whether or not
compensation is received. Examples of conflicts include, but are not
limited to:
1. Working as a process server, bill collector, repossessor of vehicles,
or any other similar employment in which a deputy might be
expected to exercise his sworn authority to the employer's benefit.
2. Performing personal investigations or any employment which
might require access to criminal history information, records or
files.
3. Wearing the Sheriffs Office uniform in the performance of tasks
other than those of a law enforcement nature.
4. Assisting in any manner, the case preparation of the defense in
any criminal action.
5. Employment involving bail bond agencies.
6. Investigative work for attorney's, insurance companies, collection
agencies, security firms or other related business.
7. Employment as a private watchman, private guard, bouncer or
private store detective other than approved enforcement related
extra duty employment under this policy.
8. Direct or indirect employment in connection with the operation of
any business licensed under the Beverage Law, except when the
business has obtained licenses only to sell beer or beer and wine
for consumption off the premises or more than 50% of the
establishments gross sales are from a source other than the sale
of alcoholic beverages.
9. Employment at a place of business that engages adult entertainment
(i.e. topless dancing, strip tease, etc.).
10. Any other employment which adversely affects the performance of
official duties or which creates a conflict of interest, ethical violation,
violation of ordinance, department policy or procedure, or Florida
Statute.
11. No extra duty or off duty employment will be permitted, if a potential
employer places any restrictions of race, color, gender or national origin
on who may work the job. All assignments for extra duty employment
are to be made on a non-discriminatory basis regardless of race,
color, gender or national origin.
12. Employees shall not engage in any enforcement related or
non-enforcement related extra duty or off duty employment that
constitutes a threat to the status or dignity of the Sheriffs Office.
(i.e establishments) whose primary purpose is to engage in the
sale of pornographic books, magazines, sexual devices, videos
or that otherwise provide entertainment or services of a sexual
nature.
13. Any extra duty employment opportunities that include outside agency
personnel performing duties under the coordination and direction
of a Sheriffs Office extra duty job schedule coordinator is prohibited
unless prior approval is received from the employee's Division
Commander. Potential employers having a need to hire multiple
agencies will be informed of the necessity to have a separate
and distinct coordination and responsibility process for duty
requirements whereby outside agencies are responsible for their
own actions and not related to the Sheriffs Office.
